Call for Papers

Annual Research Conference, the Association of Cultural Economics Japan
Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan July 3-4 , 2010

The Japan Association of Cultural Economics (JACE) is pleased to announce a Call for Papers for its Annual Research Conference. With a view to hosting the biannual conference of the Association of Cultural Economics International (ACEI) in Kyoto, Japan in 2012, this Research Conference will welcome papers in English for international researchers, both based overseas and those residing in Japan, that will contribute to discussions and exchanges of ideas on various issues in the field of cultural economics as widely defined between Japanese and international participants. The conference will be held in Kobe Gakuentoshi Campus of the University of Hyogo.

For more information on JACE, visit its website.

Kobe is a major city in the Western part of Japan (Kansai area), easy to access from abroad. We suggest that conference participants fly into the Kansai International Airport. With an international atmosphere, openness and the economic and cultural capital accumulated over the centuries, the city is making strenuous efforts to nurture the creative industries including fashion, film and music, among others. It has been a home to major concert halls and museums as well as small-scale alternative places for the arts. For general tourist information on Kobe, visit http://www.feel-kobe.jp/english/index.html.

Topics of papers previously presented have included creative cities, government funding for the arts, government policy for nonprofit organizations in the arts and culture, cultural participation, case studies of community development with the use of the arts, copyright policy and its impact on the creative industries, and comparative study of cultural policy. The proposal can go beyond this list, as long as it addresses political, economic or organizational issues surrounding the creative, cultural sector. The paper does not need to be based on neo-classical economics, but could be from diverse disciplines such as sociology, cultural studies, geography, politics and policy studies.

We expect to have at least one session specifically allocated to international researchers, with commentators and the chair selected from the members of the JACE. Attendance fee will be charged, but there will be no obligation to join the membership of the JACE.

We will strive to make the experience of non-Japanese speakers as comfortable as possible, but regret that the main proceedings of the conference will be basically in Japanese, except in those designated sessions where English is spoken. Depending on the budgeting, we might be able to provide translation of Japanese keynote speeches into English.
